Canvas Café: Innovation and Connection in Face-to-Face Training

Image
CanvasCafe_398x230_ING

A collaborative learning space that combines in-person experience with educational technology

At Canvas Café, the name says it all: it's not just about knowledge and learning. Here, cups of coffee and cookies become tools to foster an environment conducive to collaboration, bringing you a complete experience, while ambient music, barely perceptible, caresses the senses and creates an informal space ideal for concentration and creativity.

Through this dynamic, the structure of an educational model that goes beyond traditional classrooms is discussed, where participants not only acquire knowledge, but also share their ideas and practices from their experience with the Canvas platform. Some of the topics that are usually addressed in this session are: how to assign assignments, generating quizzes, how to link the evidence with eLumen, among others.

At least a hundred professors from various schools - Engineering, Business, Humanities, Social Sciences and Government, as well as LiFE - have participated in this unprecedented academic experience. Their enthusiasm and commitment to teaching have been palpable, creating an environment of collaboration and mutual learning.

Canvas Café has been carried out 5 times and well received by teachers. Some of the comments received at the end of these sessions.

At the end of the experience, we asked participants for feedback and they expressed their enthusiasm for being part of an interdisciplinary group.

At the end of the experience, the teachers expressed their enthusiasm for this initiative, appreciating the opportunity to learn about and share different practices with their colleagues from different schools, enriching their learning experience.

They valued the opportunity to learn about practices and perspectives from colleagues from other schools, which enriched their learning experience. They also appreciated the in-person spaces, especially in a context where online courses abound. Some mentioned that, with so many virtual options, they sometimes feel a little lost. However, this course provided them with a tangible and meaningful experience. There was genuine interest in more in-person courses or workshops, and some suggested extending the schedules, even offering options in the afternoons.

As the trend is increasingly digital, training and face-to-face training remain key to developing skills and knowledge:

In experiential learning, direct interaction with instructors and peers allows concepts to be applied in real-life situations. Personal contact facilitates communication and allows for instant resolution of questions. Participating in face-to-face sessions demonstrates commitment and reinforces a sense of responsibility. In addition, face-to-face interactions create lasting connections and foster mutual support. Practice in face-to-face environments contributes to better knowledge retention, while classroom energy drives creativity. Active methodologies, such as participatory dynamics, enrich the learning process, and the relationships built can become a valuable professional network.

In conclusion, face-to-face training remains an essential pillar for personal and professional growth, perfectly complementing the advantages offered by digital technology. Spaces such as Canvas Café strengthen this combination, providing an environment where collaborative learning and direct interaction are enhanced by technological innovation, creating a comprehensive experience that boosts both knowledge and professional relationships.

AI Summit 2024

Image
AISummit2024_398x230

Faculty Transforming Education

Organized by the Center for Educational Development and Innovation in Education (CEDDIE) of Tecnológico de Monterrey, AI Summit: Faculty Transforming Education, brought together high school, professional and graduate teachers, on July 29, 30 and 31, 2024, at the Mexico City campus. In this first edition, a face-to-face collaboration space was created to design learning experiences enriched with artificial intelligence to be implemented during August-December, and thus build a benchmark of good practices.

Along the three days of activity, more than 170 teachers participated in talks regarding to the state of the art in artificial intelligence, immersive work sessions and practical activities related to the use and application of AI in education; the event culminated with the presentation of a prototype developed collaboratively, in disciplinary and interdisciplinary teams, to be put into practice later with the students.

During the sessions, expert voices shared information and recommendations regarding the daily use and interaction with artificial intelligence; from the perspective of the Tec graduate and current master's student, Bernardo González, the issue highlighted was that as teachers we need to be aware of the moment in which we are living nowadays, where the work environment needs are rapidly changing; we also have to consider that almost all students already use artificial intelligence, however, not all of them do it in a precisely way to obtain a specific objective, and that is where guidance from teachers is required.

Throughout the event, collaboration was a key theme, particularly in the breakout sessions. Teams from related fields and interdisciplinary group areas demonstrated how the union of different perspectives allows the exchange of ideas and enriches the experience and knowledge of those who participate, giving rise to creative and effective educational solutions through the comprehensive use of artificial intelligence.

"It has given me a lot of new information and to see the new wave of disruptive technology that is going to affect the whole society and particularly education," said Professor Uriel Caballero, from the School of Humanities and Education.

Creativity, on the other hand, was the driving force behind many of the initiatives presented. The teachers showed that the use of artificial intelligence, together with innovative methodologies and didactic strategies, can significantly enrich the educational experience.

"An opportunity to learn from the best, because here there are about 200 professors, the best in the system, and to begin to develop new ideas around artificial intelligence applied to education, and specifically to the Tec 21 model, which as we know, has very interesting particularities," said Professor Ricardo Aguayo, from the School of Architecture, Art and Design.

To conclude the activities, the design projects were presented and evaluated by a committee, based on the potential for impact and feasibility; here are some of the featured projects:

  • InnovAItive Learning. Responsible and innovative integration of artificial intelligence in the teaching-learning process through three key phases: diagnosis, interactive teaching, and personalized feedback, with the support of a quiz, an interactive class, and an AI tutor, respectively.
  • Empathic Communication AI. Based on the generation of conflict scenarios with the use of AI, students are asked to address the situation presented using communication, empathy, and conflict management skills.
  • Executive Hot Seat AI. Faculty from various business disciplines create extensive C-level-executive profile prompts that they use to train Chatbase. By assigning the project to students, they are introduced to their different C-level executives, who will be able to advise and provide feedback to the students.
  • MediTec: Virtual Patient. Implementation of Augmented Reality with ChatGPT to simulate a virtual patient that supports the conduct of an interview and medical history of a patient, implementing an evaluation tool.

The distinguished projects could be part of digital publications and participate in forums such as national innovation talks, in addition to the IFE conference 2025.

The event ended with the participant’s commitment to implement and share their findings and invite colleagues to enrich the ideas shared and maximize the impact of the proposals built to continue innovating in teaching practice.

Check out the highlights moments of the event in this video.

The importance of RNP 2024

Image
398_ING

An event that focused on artificial intelligence and human flourishing

The National Teachers' Meeting (RNP) 2024 was a space for reflection and learning during the annual meeting of the professional and graduate academic community of Tecnológico de Monterrey. In the milestone of a world driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), this three-day event stood out for its invitation to know and visualize not only the reaches of technology, but also the exciting cultural change in which human flourishing plays a leading role.

Teachers from all over the country joined in this event, sharing experiences and learning. The Dialogue Tables invited teachers to reflect on the impact of AI in different fields of teaching, from teaching practice and creativity, to its responsible use and its impact on sustainable development. Teachers not only joined the discussion, but also worked on proposals on how AI can improve and advance education.

During the Development Workshops, workshops were offered on different topics such as Teaching Excellence, Educational Innovation, Artificial Intelligence, Teacher's Well-being, Diversity, Inclusion, Sustainability, among others. In addition, two intensive workshops were offered: LXD Week and AI Enriched Learning. The objective of these development days is that teachers not only learn about the topics, but are also able to apply what they have learned in their classrooms. The participation of our teachers in the artificial intelligence track stands out, with 2,803 participants/course and 1,139 unique participants.

To relive this event, we highlight three key elements:

1. The AI Guide: An essential tool was shared with professors so they could quickly understand what AI is and how it is promoted from Tecnológico de Monterrey. To read the guide, click here.

2. Talk by MJ Petroni: This expert on the complex relationships between humans and machines addressed the topic of cultivating a thriving mindset in the age of AI. Expect access to all the talks from the event in this week's upcoming release.

3. Innovation Projects: 114 educational innovation projects were presented in the Tecnológico de Monterrey metaverse, showcasing the creativity and skills of our professors through their classroom implementations. To see all the projects and the distinctions for outstanding achievements click here.

The RNP 2024 has been an exciting and enriching event that helped teachers to understand and reflect on the evolution of education in the era of Artificial Intelligence.

Learn about the changes in the Digital Library and how to resolve or convert direct links in your courses, we're here to support you!

In August, training workshops will begin to help teachers understand how to update the URLs in their CANVAS courses following the update of the Digital Library.

This update now facilitates authentication and access to all collections through a single and standardized entry. The new authentication process is through the OpenAthens platform, making it easier to access over 177 digital collections and millions of reference resources. The goal is to authenticate once instead of for each collection.

Don't worry about "broken links" messages, the resources remain available in the Digital Library for you and your students, you just need to update the URLs you have in CANVAS for all your courses.

If you want to learn more about this change and how to resolve or convert direct links in your courses, we recommend signing up for workshops that will be held on two different dates:

  • Tuesdays, August 6th, 13th, and 20th at 10:00 am
  • Thursdays, August 8th, 15th, and 22nd at 3:00 pm

Visit the calendar:

https://ceddie.tec.mx/en/teaching-development  Fill out the form in the center part

Select "Multidisciplinary" from the left menu, Choose the workshop: "OpenAthens: new authentication method in the Library" Click on "View offerings" to see available dates.

We are at your disposal on the Library portal, in this section, where you can write us or make an appointment with a librarian.
