Canvas Café: Innovation and Connection in Face-to-Face Training

Image
CanvasCafe_398x230_ING

A collaborative learning space that combines in-person experience with educational technology

At Canvas Café, the name says it all: it's not just about knowledge and learning. Here, cups of coffee and cookies become tools to foster an environment conducive to collaboration, bringing you a complete experience, while ambient music, barely perceptible, caresses the senses and creates an informal space ideal for concentration and creativity.

Through this dynamic, the structure of an educational model that goes beyond traditional classrooms is discussed, where participants not only acquire knowledge, but also share their ideas and practices from their experience with the Canvas platform. Some of the topics that are usually addressed in this session are: how to assign assignments, generating quizzes, how to link the evidence with eLumen, among others.

At least a hundred professors from various schools - Engineering, Business, Humanities, Social Sciences and Government, as well as LiFE - have participated in this unprecedented academic experience. Their enthusiasm and commitment to teaching have been palpable, creating an environment of collaboration and mutual learning.

Canvas Café has been carried out 5 times and well received by teachers. Some of the comments received at the end of these sessions.

At the end of the experience, we asked participants for feedback and they expressed their enthusiasm for being part of an interdisciplinary group.

At the end of the experience, the teachers expressed their enthusiasm for this initiative, appreciating the opportunity to learn about and share different practices with their colleagues from different schools, enriching their learning experience.

They valued the opportunity to learn about practices and perspectives from colleagues from other schools, which enriched their learning experience. They also appreciated the in-person spaces, especially in a context where online courses abound. Some mentioned that, with so many virtual options, they sometimes feel a little lost. However, this course provided them with a tangible and meaningful experience. There was genuine interest in more in-person courses or workshops, and some suggested extending the schedules, even offering options in the afternoons.

As the trend is increasingly digital, training and face-to-face training remain key to developing skills and knowledge:

In experiential learning, direct interaction with instructors and peers allows concepts to be applied in real-life situations. Personal contact facilitates communication and allows for instant resolution of questions. Participating in face-to-face sessions demonstrates commitment and reinforces a sense of responsibility. In addition, face-to-face interactions create lasting connections and foster mutual support. Practice in face-to-face environments contributes to better knowledge retention, while classroom energy drives creativity. Active methodologies, such as participatory dynamics, enrich the learning process, and the relationships built can become a valuable professional network.

In conclusion, face-to-face training remains an essential pillar for personal and professional growth, perfectly complementing the advantages offered by digital technology. Spaces such as Canvas Café strengthen this combination, providing an environment where collaborative learning and direct interaction are enhanced by technological innovation, creating a comprehensive experience that boosts both knowledge and professional relationships.

Enhancing Learning with Efective Breaks

Image
AprendizajePausas_398x230_ING

Discover the Power of Pauses in Teaching with Sintonía CEDDIE's Latest Episode.

In the most recent episode of Sintonía CEDDIE, Rafaela Diegoli, Academic Vice Dean of Tecnológico de Monterrey, and Pablo Andrés Torres, a faculty member from the School of Humanities and Education, delve deeply into a strategy that many of us as faculty members might not pay much attention to: the effective use of breaks. The discussion explores how these intentional pauses are an essential part of the teaching and learning process and how they can significantly enhance the educational experiences of our students.

According to our guests, breaks in the academic context are far more than simple interruptions; they are crucial intervals that allow the brain to process and absorb information. This episode touches on the potential benefits that pauses can bring to teaching methods and shares examples of their effective implementation.

For faculty, the key message is to recognize the optimal times to take a pause and how to schedule these interludes to reap the maximum benefits without disrupting the course's momentum. It highlights the need for discipline in taking the break and then refocusing when it's time to continue.

Breaks are also portrayed as acts of balance and commitment to personal care, catering to basic needs that we sometimes overlook, such as hydration. These moments of respite facilitate reconnection and ensure that the time dedicated to learning is more productive, free from distractions.

In addition to practical advice, the episode encourages starting with small steps by integrating brief breaks into classes and assessing their impact on the classroom experience, identifying the spaces where such pauses could be inserted for the benefit of your students.

Don't miss out on this enlightening conversation on Sintonía CEDDIE, designed to refine your teaching techniques and deepen student engagement.

Semana e Winter 2024

Image
SemanaE_398x230_ING

An immersive experience!

Semana e is an initiative driven by CEDDIE since 2019, aimed at professionally connecting teachers from Tecnológico de Monterrey. This experience occurs in summer and winter, collaborating with training partners to address real issues, in order to develop and strengthen cross-cutting competencies

From January 29th to February 2nd, 2024, two Week e sessions were held, one in the Villa del Carbón Community in the State of Mexico and the other in Aromatics and Chemicals of the Center, in San Luis Potosí. In this edition, a total of 33 teachers from the Ciudad de México, Cuernavaca, Estado de México, Guadalajara, Hidalgo, Laguna, Monterrey, Puebla, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí campuses participated. 55% were from the School of Engineering and Sciences, 36% from the School of Business, and 9% from the School of Humanities and Education.

The challenges faced by our teachers during the immersion were:

Communities of Las Moras and El Ocotal in Villa del Carbón:

  • How to reactivate the route of the Otomí community museum?
  • How to increase the market and distribution network of the Organic Artisan Market?

Chemicals and Aromatics of the Center:

  • How can we transform organizational culture to promote an approach of innovation and agility?
  • How can we generate supply alternatives to the hypochlorite business that allow maintaining relationships with suppliers and strengthening commercial relations with current customers during times of scarcity of this raw material?

During the week, teachers became acquainted with the challenges posed by training partners, subsequently having contact in real scenarios to experience what is done in the community and the company, as well as conducting interviews with those responsible. From this, they were able to generate initial solution ideas.

The teachers worked with the Design Thinking methodology, guided and supported by expert facilitators, focusing on the root causes to generate solution ideas, creating a prototype to receive feedback, which allowed them to obtain a definitive proposal, presented by the teams to the training partners at the end of the week.

"A great experience, observing their needs and offering a solution focused on them... It allows the teacher to relate to real problems that are contributing to the country's development, without being a large industry," commented Professor Adriana Erika Martinez Cantón.

Semana e experience allows collaboration among colleagues from different disciplines, the generation of greater empathy with students in the face of challenges, and the strengthening of transversal skills.

We appreciate the participation of the instructors and facilitators:

  • Master Oscar Alberto Bojórquez Gutiérrez by campus Querétaro
  • PhD. Eder Estrada Villalba ambos by campus Querétaro.
  • PhD. Miriam Toribio Morales by campus Monterrey
  • PhD. J. Guadalupe Torres Armenta by campus San Luis Potosí
  • PhD. Norma Angélica Ruiz Servín by campus Estado de México
  • Master Georgina Raquel Bustamente Castillo by campus Estado de México
  • Bachelor degree Juan Carlos Hernández Cruz by campus Estado de México
