Creating caring classrooms: Strategies for positive classrooms / Denise Pope



According to Newton and colleagues  (2017) a caring climate can be defined  as “the extent to which individuals perceive a particular setting to be interpersonally inviting, safe, supportive, and able to provide the experience of being valued and respected.” (Newton, et al, 2017). Considering classroom environment, imagine the connection and understanding we can create with our students when we start considering this as part of our daily and natural activities that may promote learning.

Denise Pope, considered an expert in fostering student´s engagement and health, shares her thoughts and advices. Traditionally a caring community of learners has been considered a key element in nursery level, the thing is that learning is a long life activity, in which a relation between human beings. Creating a caring climate in college levels has proved that when students have a strong sense of belonging they develop more learning skills, with a significant balance in their emotional and physical health.

Denise Pope 

Dr. Pope specializes in curriculum studies, service learning, student engagement, school reform, and qualitative research methods. She is particularly interested in student voices and the students' perspectives of school. She focuses on academic stress and its consequences for students' mental and physical health, engagement with learning, and integrity. She co-founded Challenge Success to partner with schools and families to implement research-based strategies for student well-being and engagement. She is the author of "Doing School": How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students (Yale University Press, 2001), which was awarded Notable Book in Education by the American School Board Journal, 2001. She is co-author of Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids (Wiley, 2015). Dr. Pope co-hosts the podcast "School's In" on Sirius XM radio.
